- Abstract
The article presents information on the historical and contemporary elements which led to the implementation of the Indian Child Welfare Act in the U.S. The local county welfare officials used to forcefully remove American Indian children from their families and place them in foster homes for adoption with non-Indian couples. The members of the Devils Lake Sioux tribe of North Dakota demanded assistance from the Association on American Indian Affairs in New York that has resulted in the enforcement of the law.
