Whole Body Healing (Book Review).
- Abstract
Whole Body Healing. Natural Healing With Movement, Exercise, Massage and Other Drug-Free Methods. C. Lowe, and J. W. Nechas (1983). Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press. The authors maintain that too often we do not think of the body as ones' ally for good health. The body constantly works to keep one's system well and strong. The authors offer natural healing through physical exercises (like walking), movement (like Yoga, and massage (like acupressure), The authors maintain that what one does to the body on the outside broadcasts messages to the organs and systems on the inside. For example, when one exercises, the body sends a set of signals to inner organs that tell the circulatory system to increase the blood flow to muscles. The body raises the metabolic rate, burning more calories. The body tells glands to release endorphins, hormones that relieve pain and put one in a good mood. This method helps one's body send healing messages, and helps one get well, and to stay well. There is an alphabetical listing of suggested exercises, therapies -- like acupuncture and acupressure. It also explains the many natural therapies that require professional help, like Rolfing and chiropractic: how to find the nearest practitioner, what they do, and how much they cost, and what to expect from a visit. A special feature is an index of diseases, from arthritis to varicose veins. It describes how to use movement and exercise to stay well.
