- Abstract
The article discusses issues related to the role of fluorocarbons in depleting the stratospheric ozone. It is reported that the recent discovery on the role of atmospheric chlorine nitrate molecules in negating the affect of fluorocarbons initiated ozone depletion has been disagreed by chemists Mario J. Molina and F. Sherwood Rowland. Molina and Rowland also hypothesized that fluorocarbons would remain in the atmosphere 50 to 100 years before breaking up. However, chemist J. Peter Jesson differed with Molina on the long-term depletion rate and on the lifetime of fluorocarbons in the stratosphere.
