- Abstract
Contemporary literature seems to agree on not establishing a relationship between the origin of tribal organisation and pastoral-nomadism. However, it is possible to demonstrate that the transformations of pastoral-nomadism due to historical and geographical conditions and the new shapes it has taken resulted in the disintegration of tribal organisation, thus strongly reaffirming the relationship between this mode of subsistence and social organization. Due to their specific historical and ecological conditions, the geographical areas of Eastern Black Sea and Caucasus are especially illustrative examples for showing the disintegration of tribes subsisting on animal husbandry as a result of adapting to different husbandry strategies. That this disintegration lead to the emergence of peasantry and demise of tribal structures in these regions give us some clues about how tribal social organization based on pastoral nomadism transformed. It is also helpful to address the geographical conditions of Eastern Black Sea and Caucasus in order to understand the resistance of the tribal formations which preserved their tribal structures despite adopting similar strategies and approach the history of the region from this perspective. This article is such an attempt.
