- Abstract
This paper deals with the early Republican governing elite's attempts at forging an ideal teacher identity, defined as an agent of the modernization project. Although state's penetration into and transformation of the traditional society through schooling has been widely acknowledged in modern Turkish historiography, the possibility of the teachers' resistance to these national projects and policies has not been explored. The paper argues that the project of recruiting teachers for modernization purposes was doomed to fail, mainly because the state lacked the very tools and infrastructural power that was necessary to carry out this policy. Although teachers were expected to sanitize, moralize, and nationalize peasants, most teachers who were faced with economic and social restraints were not interested in assuming this responsibility.
