- Title
"I am my master's servant for hire": Contract and Identity in Richard Steele's The Conscious Lovers.
- Authors
Wolfram, Nathalie
- Abstract
This literary criticism discusses the ways in which English playwright Richard Steele dealt with the related themes of class consciousness and contract-based master-servant relationships in his comedic work "The Conscious Lovers." The author is concerned with the ways in which members of both the aristocracy and middle-class interact with servants in the text. It is argued that Steel disassociates servant identity from that of the master.
