- Abstract
"Fight Like Hell: The Testimony of Mother Jones" is a film that provides an introduction to the life and advocacy of Mary Harris Jones, better known as Mother Jones. The film, adapted from a play by Kaiulani Lee, portrays Mother Jones as a fierce advocate for the working class, fighting alongside exploited miners and mill workers during a time when union organizing was dangerous. While the film lacks action sequences and elaborate set designs, Kaiulani Lee delivers a compelling performance as Mother Jones, capturing both her fiery speeches and moments of quiet reflection. However, the film does have some shortcomings, including inaccuracies in Mother Jones's autobiography and a lack of discussion on political ideologies and the role of women organizers. Overall, "Fight Like Hell" serves as a tribute to Mother Jones and a primer on Gilded Age history, offering valuable insights into the struggles faced by workers and the importance of organizing for a more just future.
