- Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge and the attitudes of dentists in relation to the methods of counseling for smoking cessation, Therefore, a questionnaire was distributed to 70 dentists in the city of Maringa, Paraná State/Brazil, dealing with questions such as the methods applied for smokers advice and the receptiveness of these patients for such intervention. Forty professionals answered the questionnaire. The results showed that most professionals demonstrate great interest in the relationship between tobacco and oral problems (65%), they think that it is possible to insert smokers counseling and treatment in the daily office service (60%) know some method of intervention for smoking cessation (55%), and do counseling (32.5%). However, they do minimal intervention, because most of the patients is not interested in counseling and has little interest in quit smoking (57.5%). This way, most part of dentists considers the counseling success rate low (45%). Hence, within the limits of the present study, it can be assumed that the number of professionals that does not get involved is still high and the intervention, when it is done, is more concentrated in questions and advises about smoking, being relegated to second plan the more intense and direct counseling of smokers, as well as the advise of alternative methods for quit smoking, such as the therapy of nicotine replacement.
