- Abstract
The article presents a study which describes the role and significance of the Badakhshani Institute of the Religious Masters (pirs) in the maintenance of the religious, social, and political matters of the society in the nineteenth and twentieth century. It examines the role of the pirs' network, as an institution of social control and organisation that provides religious guidance, but also collects religious taxes.
