- Abstract
The article presents a case study of the 2006 fresh spinach recall due to Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination, following the foodborne illness outbreaks in the U.S. It explores the economic impact of the recall of spinach and other leafy green vegetables by analyzing the Nielson scanner data. It suggests that fresh produce grown and harvested outdoors is vulnerable to various microbial contamination, and therefore, any warning and recall process must be done immediately.
