- Abstract
The article discusses Willa Cather's source material for the book "One of Ours," which is set during the Spanish-American War. According to the author, the novel was motivated by the death of Cather's cousin, Grosvenor P. Cather, in World War I. Both Grosvenor and Cather were inspired by the letters of three local men who fought in the Spanish-American War: Oley Iverson, H. C. Gress, and Bruce Payne. Excerpts of the letters are presented. The character Claude Wheeler, who is based on Cather's cousin, is discussed.
