- Abstract
The article focuses on the impact of environmental interactions with mitochondria to a range of illnesses including autism, cancer, and Alzheimer disease. It discusses the Society of Toxicology's (SOT) 2010 annual meeting, in which the theme focused on mitochondrial disease. Director Michael Holsapple of the International Life Sciences Institute's Health and Environmental Sciences Institute in Washington, D.C. says that mitochondria are susceptible to oxidative stress and damage, as they have higher percentage of coding DNA compared to nuclear genomes. It mentions that dietary sugars were converted by mitochondria into adenosine triphospate (ATP) which is used by cells as fuel. It explores the damaging effects of chemicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) on mitochondrial functioning. INSETS: Untitled;Untitled.
