Abstract
The article presents a reprint of the speech “Generalship,” by Barbara W. Tuchman, which appeared in the 1972 issue of “Parameters.” Tuchman, best known as an author of books on military affairs, presented the speech on April 3, 1972 at the U.S. Army War College. She discussed the history of generalship in the context of military art and science, commented on civil-military relations, and addressed the qualities which generals require.
