- Abstract
The article discusses the history of Nuevo Santander in South Texas. Topics covered include Spaniard José de Escandón's role as the founder and first governor of the colony in the mid-18th century, the leadership of each town in the region by a military captain, the colony's transformation into the Mexican state of Tamaulipas when Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, and the region's division into two by the Rio Grande River with the end of the Mexican American War.
