Magic as a State of Mind?
- Authors
SØRENSEN, JESPER
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the book "The Realities of Witchcraft and Popular Magic in Early Modern Europe," by Edward Bever is presented. The author agrees with Bever's assertion that neuroscientific and cognitive approaches are needed to explain what goes on in sorcery, possession, prophecy, divination, and magic. However, he claims that it is still unclear what Bever means by the idea of magic, and he seems to categorize magic as any practice ostracized by the Christian churches whether Calvinist, Lutheran, or Catholic.
