- Abstract
Introduction: Adolescents and children like adults have been found not to meet up with the recommended levels of physical activity. Objective: To assess physical activity levels of school-aged children and adolescents in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved randomly selected participants between ages 8 and 19 years attending primary and secondary schools in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The protocol for this study was approved by Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital Complex Review Committee. Participants were informed about the procedure and assent was obtained on their behalf. The Physical Activity Questionnaires for children and adolescents were used to obtain information from participants. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics of t-test and Chi square at 0.05, a-level. Results: One thousand five hundred copies of questionnaire were administered but only 1480 were amenable to statistical analyses giving above 90% response rate. The average age of participants was 12.0 ± 2.59 years. The majority of participants; 1162 (78.5%) reported moderate level of physical activity with significantly more number of children in the category; 600 (83.6%), 562 (73.8%) children and adolescents respectively. Male participants reported a significant, higher level of physical activity than female participants. Female adolescents were least active. Conclusion: This study concluded that children were more physically active than adolescents; males were also more physically active than their female counterparts. Participation in physical activity should be encouraged from childhood and with increasing age.
