- Abstract
The author proposes hypotheses according to which the sense of life happiness and life satisfaction has backward influence on perception and evaluation of objective life conditions. The hypothesis of cognitive consistence (halo effect) is submitted to explain these effects on perception of objective conditions; the hypothesis of causal attributions is submitted to explain the effects of quality of life on interpretation and evaluation of input information. According to the first hypothesis, in perception of life conditions the phenomenon similar to halo effect plays a role. In consequence happy people see their life conditions as better ones than unhappy people. According to the second hypothesis, people use different causal schemas to explain the satisfaction and dissatisfaction with their lives. These hypotheses - above all the hypothesis concerning the effects of causal attributions - were specified separately for the individual and state levels and tested on data from three ESS surveys (2002, 2004, 2006). The author concentrated on the effects of education, health, and political-economical situation of the state. These three factors have significant independent effects on the sense of life happiness and satisfaction. However, their effects are simultaneously moderated by quality of life. In individuals who are above average happy and satisfied with their lives in the framework of the state, there is almost no relationship between their sense of life happiness and their education, subjective health and satisfaction with the political-economic situation. But in the individuals who are relatively unhappy and dissatisfied with their lives in the framework of the state, there are very strong connections among these variables. On the state level, it appeared analogically that the more the individuals in average are happy and satisfied, the lower are the connections (correlations) of these three variables with the quality of life in this state.
