THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF DEADWOOD'S CHINATOWN: A PROLOGUE.
- Authors
Fosha, Rose Estep
- Abstract
Summarizes gold rush-era archaeological findings unearthed in digs undertaken in probable Chinese neighborhoods of Deadwood, South Dakota. Although Chinese immigrants came as miners, most soon entered professions that serviced miners' needs. Excavation sites were selected based on sources including fire insurance maps, photographs, and deeds. Excavated materials verified known historical information and provided greater understanding of Chinese integration. Careful digging at pits, privies, and a temple revealed information about immigrants' diet, gaming activities, opium use, ceremonial practices and objects, and societal structures. Because the population was overwhelmingly male, few women's or children's artifacts have been found.
