- Abstract
The article discusses the intersections between media theory and body and performance art as framed through the works of artist Claes Oldenburg and media theorist Marshall McLuhan. Topics covered include associations between the word "massage," the media and the idea of mass manipulation in the mid-1960s, McLuhan's argument in his book "The Medium Is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects" about the media's role in molding populations, and his contention that media could be traced back to human origins. Also mentioned are the reconfiguration of human beings by different technologies and the motif of death in Oldenburg's performance.
