- Abstract
This article analyzes the prospects for the British economy. GDP growth climbed from 2.1 per cent in the year to the second quarter of 2003 to 3.6 per cent in the year to the second quarter of 2004. More recently growth appears to have fallen back somewhat. Preliminary estimates from National Statistics show the economy expanding below its trend rate at 0.4 per cent in the third quarter of this year. The weakness of industrial production in the third quarter is somewhat surprising given the state of world demand and the surge in business investment observed in the first half of this year. The outlook for growth in the next couple of years is relatively benign. INSET: Box B. Fiscal performance against the Golden Rule....
