- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the academic performance and development of recently established universities, their positions, and performance in various ranking systems, and rating reports. The universities' positions were obtained from the following ranking systems: ARWU, CWTS Leiden, CWUR, NTU, QS, SCIMAGO, THE, URAP, and US News. The study also drew on data from TÜBİTAK's indexes. Articles and citation data were downloaded from the InCites database. The study was conducted using a comparative approach, and analyses were made based on criteria such as academic background, research university status, and whether they have a medical school. Therefore, the positions of recently established universities within all universities were identified, as well as the grouping of universities with similar profiles and characteristics in terms of field competency, articles, and citation data. The institutions that top all ranking systems are research universities that were established before 2000. In some cases, new universities have even outperformed older research universities in specific ranking systems. New universities with and without medical schools were grouped together based on their field competency, articles, and citation data. Universities with medical schools that have high articles and citation data have been found to be in the "low volume and quality" category in terms of field competencies. Similarly, universities without medical schools are in the "low articles and citation" category, and their field competencies are not significantly different.
