- Abstract
The article presents an overview of the origins and strategies of consolidation of political leadership in Brazil from 1945 to 2010, focusing on the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Maranhão. Particular attention is given to politicians considered founders of the main political movements, such as Getúlio Vargas, Alberto Pasqualini, and Leonel Brizola from the Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro, as well as José Sarney and Victorino Freire from the Partido Social Democrata. Subjects include political elites, charisma, and political doctrines.
