- Abstract
This essay examines shipping finance in the Republic of Ragusa during the French wars, a period of high risk and equally high profit for seafarers in the Mediterranean. We focus here on maritime loans, a diachronic credit and insurance instrument which dominated the daily practice of maritime business in Ragusa and other ports. The evidence, which derives from maritime loan contracts between 1783 and 1805 that are preserved in the State Archives of Dubrovnik, is examined on the basis of the basic parameters, terms and conditions in Ragusa market and the protagonists themselves, looking at their social, cultural and economic background and the relationships, cooperation and disputes that arose between them. Although there is an abundance of primary sources of this type, mainly notarial documents, historical studies of the use of maritime loans as credit and financial instruments is still rather limited. The present study of Ragusa is part of an attempt to rectify this by showing that maritime loans were fully integrated into the shipping business and were very profitable investments for the individuals involved.
