- Abstract
Lately, there has been noticed a concerning increase in the incidence of caesarean deliveries globally. This procedure took an ascending trend and its consequences on future pregnancies are of utmost importance. The development of placenta accreta spectrum disorders seems to be attributable to a scarred uterus, particularly a caesarean scar. We conducted a review article based on data from 23 papers published during the last five years, assessing the complex management of abnormal placentation, the risk factors determining this pathology, the complications of caesarean delivery for future pregnancies and the challenges in diagnosing placenta accreta spectrum disorders before delivery. It appears to be widely acknowledged that the increase in the number of caesarean sections is the leading cause of abnormal placentation and that women should not be offered the option of caesarean delivery in the absence of a clear indication. Nevertheless, a general agreement and guideline regarding proper screening for placenta accreta spectrum disorders are asked for.
