- Title
Contemporary Book Limited Editions: Popular Culture Turned Elite.
- Authors
Roberts, Garyn G.
- Abstract
The article focuses on limited editions of contemporary books. In recent years, specialty publishers have created new markets for themselves by producing limited edition hooks like never before. These books often command astronomical prices typically in hundreds of dollars just months after release, and only a very small fraction of the consuming public is ever able to indulge in much less find such luxuries. Limited editions epitomize the essence of "elite" culture because as elite culture they are very limited in distribution. It is perhaps obvious that mainstream society does not have access to these phenomena. Press runs typically are restricted to figures between a few hundred and a few thousand. While specialized training or learned appreciation is not essential to understand and participate in the elite culture of limited editions, special insight as to when and where these books are available is required. By their very unique nature, limited editions are almost always first editions of some sort.
