- Title
VENUS AND MARS.
- Abstract
The article features the 1485 painting "Venus and Mars," by Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. Topics discussed include the interest of then British Chancellor of the Exchequer Benjamin Disraeli in this painting when it was presented in the June 1874 Christie's auction event, the portrayal of the relationship between Roman gods Venus and Mars in this painting, and the possibility that Botticelli attempted to recreate Roman artist Aetion's long-lost painting through this artwork.
