- Abstract
The article discusses the architectural design and construction of the British government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Whitehall, London, England. A competition held in order to determine whether a neo-Gothic or Classical architectural design would be used in the Government Offices' construction is explained in detail, with emphasis given to the eventual selection of architect George Gilbert Scott. The author argues that the Foreign and Commonwealth office was essentially built in a Classical style by a Gothic architect to unimpressive results due to political and societal pressures.
