- Abstract
1434 is a sequel to Gavin Menzies' bestselling 1421: the Year China Discovered the World (2002). The central figure of both books is the Chinese admiral, Zheng He, who led a series of seven maritime expeditions to Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean between 1405 and 1433. The purpose of these voyages was not exploration but to restore Chinese prestige and influence after the years of Mongol rule. Zheng He's voyages were considered to have achieved their purpose and after the admiral's death at Calicut, India, in 1433, the Ming emperors turned their back on the sea to concentrate on defending their northern frontier against the resurgent Mongols.
