- Title
ALLEGORESIS AS A METHOD OF DEMYTHOLOGIZATION.
- Authors
Kubat, Rodoljub S.
- Abstract
The goal of this article is to point out an ancient hermeneutical phenomenon, according to which allegorical interpretation of earlier texts included demythologization of mythical traditions. Demythologization consisted of rational-philosophical reinterpretation of myths. This exegetical method was especially emphasized in later schools -- Stoic and Neoplatonic. Allegoresis, as a method of exegesis, can be found in works of Christian interpreters of the Bible as well. They, too, were inclined to represent picturesque narratives, especially the ones of the Old Testament, in a more rationally acceptable way. Christian theologians had a different approach to history than ancient philosophical schools. This difference affected their allegorical interpretation. Christian allegoresis involved a moderate demythologization of Old Testament literary narratives.
