- Abstract
The archaeological study of historical landscapes in north-western Iberia has been completely revised in the last decades. The complexity of new records available and new holistic and synthetic theoretical approaches as a result have redefined some of the core concepts such as archaeological site and landscapes. These new perspectives have been proposed as a consequence of the implosion of the post-processual paradigms. As a result, new eclectic and sometimes integrative points of view have been developed, aimed at overcoming the postmodern disciplinary fragmentation and proposing complex archaeological interpretations. Taking into account this background and the Global Archaeology experience, in this paper the role of preventive archaeology is analysed. It is argued that preventive archaeology has been an innovative area of experimentation in the archaeological study of cultural landscapes. One of the most remarkable consequences of this approach has been the emergence of an agrarian archaeology focused on the study of the social practices of rural communities in medieval times.
