Magnitude.
- Authors
Knight, Elizabeth
- Abstract
The essay reflects on the impermanence of the world as shown by the way earthquakes are classified based on the Richter scale of magnitude developed by Charles Richter and Beno Guthenberg of the California Institute of Technology in 1935. The earthquake and aftershocks that destroyed the historic cathedral in downtown Christchurch, New Zealand on February 22, 2011 are described. The ambiguity by which a magnitude is determined is compared with the size and difficulty of whitewater on rivers.
