Between 1957 and 1959, the interior of the Cathedral of Cuernavaca (Morelos, México) was renovated and lost its neoclassical retablos and images. The reconditioning was planned by bishop Méndez Arceo and it was influenced by the liturgical functionalism. In the public opinion of Mexico, the renovation produced a discussion among the advocates of preserving untouched the viceregal heritage and the promotors of adapting the temples to the new liturgical purposes.
