- Title
Study shows impact of forced separation of owners from pets.
- Abstract
A recent study published in the Veterinary Ireland Journal highlights the negative impact of forced separation between pet owners and their animals in crisis situations, such as domestic violence. The review of 27 years of international research reveals the increased risks to both safety and psychological well-being when people are faced with the threat of separation from their pets. The study recommends incorporating questions about pets in services assisting victims of domestic violence, enhancing natural disaster evacuation plans to accommodate both people and their pets, and ensuring pet-friendly accommodation for people experiencing homelessness. However, the study acknowledges limitations, such as a focus on English-language articles and the potential omission of diverse cultural perspectives.
