- Title
Independent Correctional Oversight Mechanisms Across the United States: A 50-State Inventory.
- Authors
Deitch, Michele
- Abstract
The article presents a state-by-state inventory on independent oversight mechanism for correctional institution in the U.S. The report aims to provide a quick reference guide for stakeholders interested in models of prison and jail oversight, and to demonstrate major gaps in the systems in the country for monitoring prisoners and facility conditions. It infers that while correctional institutions exercise crucial administration over the lives and well-being of individuals, yet are operating outside of public eye, demand for both transparency and accountability. It ends that if these institutions work effectively, these oversight bodies serve to challenge the status quo, identify areas the need improvements, and indulges for assertions that prisoners' concerns are identified.
