The article examines medievalist Vasil Zlatarski's map, focusing on its historical basis with particular attention to Asen's empire, including lands in western Macedonia, Thessaly and modem Albania. It states that ethnographer Anastas Ishirkov contributed two maps of Bulgaria in the 19th century. It is noted that political aims of Bulgaria still influence modem images of medieval Balkans.
