- Title
Lost in Translation: Discourse Markers in Bai Ganyo.
- Authors
Fielder, Grace E.
- Abstract
The article examines the difficulties in translating the Bulgarian novel "Bai Ganyo," by Aleko Konstantinov, from Bulgarian to English due to Konstantinov's use of Turkish discourse markers throughout the text. The author explains how the use of Turkish demonstrates Bulgaria's connection to an Ottoman past. Focus is given to the way in which Turkish discourse markers are used in order to differentiate the speech of different characters.
