- Title
Local impact, global challenge: the role of domestic markets in the illegal wildlife trade.
- Authors
Arias, Melissa; Sackey, Hannah N.K.; Bashyal, Reshu
- Abstract
The article discusses the often overlooked issue of domestic wildlife markets in source countries and their significant impact on many species. While international wildlife trade involving high-value species has received more attention, domestic markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America involve a wide diversity of smaller species and operate under less enforcement scrutiny. These markets serve various purposes, including the pet trade and meeting cultural and medicinal demands. The article emphasizes the need for a global concern and understanding of the domestic illegal wildlife trade, as its effects are felt widely.
