- Abstract
The article discusses the quatercentenary of the deaths of composers William Byrd and Thomas Weelkes in 2023. While Byrd has received more attention in musicology, both composers are still frequently performed today. The article explores the tension between celebrating "great composers" and the trend in current research to paint a more inclusive picture of early modern music-making. It focuses on Byrd and Weelkes' contribution to informal recreational singing, which was a significant shift in 16th-century culture. The article also examines the benefits of music education and the social, performative, literary, educational, and expressive cultures of recreational singing.
