Neuropsychological assessment in MS is outdated and in need for innovation: Commentary.
- Authors
Benedict, Ralph H B
- Abstract
This article from the Multiple Sclerosis Journal discusses the adequacy of neuropsychological tests used in the research and clinical care of MS patients. One perspective argues for the utility of current tests, such as the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) and the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), which have been translated and validated in multiple countries. Another perspective highlights the limitations of these tests and advocates for computerized or digital platform testing. The article emphasizes the need for new tests to meet standards of reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change. It also discusses the potential benefits and drawbacks of computerized neuropsychological assessment devices (CNADs) and the importance of psychometrics keeping pace with technological advances.
