- Abstract
The ecological adaptability of weeds in agricultural areas contributes towards the selection of more resistant biotypes. Knowledge of factors that control seed germination provides subsidies for management strategies of these species, alternatives to the exclusive use of herbicides. Current investigation evaluates the germination and initial development of Macroptilium lathyroides seedlings under different water availability in the substrate. The seeds were kept in gerbox boxes on papers wetted by PEG 6000 and mannitol solutions, at water potentials of 0.0; -0.2; -0.4; -0.6; -0.8; and -1.0 MPa. Evaluations of germination and IVG were performed daily, whilst, by the end of ten days, the shoot length, root length and seedling dry mass were determined. Results showed that the species is osmotically affected by PEG 6000 and mannitol. Capacity below -0.2 MPa of PEG 6000 is considered critical to germination. Mannitol caused a gradual reduction in germination speed index and seedling development.
