- Authors
Gies, David T.
- Abstract
The article analyzes the relationship between obscenity and censorship in Spanish and Novohispanic poetry of the 18th century. It highlights the relationship between society and stray dogs in Mexico City, as well as indigenous practices in Peru. The efforts of the Spanish Church to prohibit works with sexual content are also mentioned. The study is based on literary texts and archival documents that show the relationship between censorship and obscenity, including works on prostitution and the social and sexual dynamics surrounding it. Additionally, the censorship of popular songs in New Spain by the Inquisition is addressed, and the poet Samaniego is defended against accusations of anticlericalism.
