- Abstract
Since the successful mass protests against the Mubarak regime in 2011, Egypt has been going through a complex political and social transformation process. Meanwhile, in July 2013, the Egyptian military intervened once again and toppled the democratically elected President Mursi. The military itself but also the anti-Mursi protesters in the streets termed this intervention as democratic for the sake of the Egyptian people and stressed that it was launched by the articulated popular will. But can a coup d'état be democratic at all? Indeed, relevant literature offers concepts that try to merge military interventions with normative assumptions about the coup's potential democratic character (»democratic coup d'état< by Ozan O. Varol). Hence, this contribution aims first at reflecting critically on the concept of the democratic coup and second at using and testing the concept for both interventions of the Egyptian military in 2011 and 2013.
