- Abstract
Mahmud II has restarted the Ottoman permanent embassies since 1832 and ambassadors were sent to European capitals. This paper attempts to shed light on a slightly concerned issue of correspondence system between ambassadors under the auspices of archive sources. In this respect, the fundamentals of ambassador's correspondence system are illuminated and the issues such as types of correspondences between ambassadors. Sublime Porte, private correspondence, the methods used to carry letters and itineraries, security problems during correspondence and crypto- correspondence will be regarded as well. The article also gives in-depth information on the problems of Ottoman ambassadors vis-a-vis the central authority. Within this scope, the problems and the types of solution methods will be explained by examples in line with the information obtained from the reports of Ottoman ambassadors.
