- Authors
Shubert, Adrian
- Abstract
This article explores the place of Baldomero Espartero in political discourse and political life during the Democratic Sexennium and the early years of the Restoration Monarchy. While Prim's «offer» of the throne is well known, the aged liberal icon was constantly invoked and his support repeatedly sought by figures from across the political spectrum, from Alfonsistas to Federal Republicans. Espartero's ongoing presence in the minds of Spaniards during a period of political crisis constitutes more than an interesting anecdote. To be sure, it reveals something fundamental about the political culture of the time.
