- Abstract
In order to make possible the agricultural application of the wastewater treatment plant (WTP) sludge, it is necessary to characterize and classify this waste taking into account mainly the possibility of the existence of compounds that configurate toxicities to the sludge and the presence of pathogenic agents, considering they are risk factors to the public health and environment. However, the legal texts about this reuse do not mention the need of toxicity essays that could complement the proposed characterizations and assure the reuse. This way, this investigation presents a toxicity study of the sanitary WTP sludge, as well as physic-chemical, microbiological, and parasitological analyses. For this purpose, a sample of the studied sludge was submitted to microbiological and parasitological essays. Next, the sample of the sludge was solubilized in accordance with the Brazilian Association for Technical Standards, being submitted the solubilized extract to physic-chemical analyses. After that, the ecotoxicology essays were performed with the organisms Daphnia magna and Eisenia fetida (worm) and with the herbaceous plant Eruca sativa (arugula). The presented toxicity essay results on the tested organisms indicate satisfactory and non-toxic values of mortality, mass gain, fertility, survival, and germination, revealing positive potential to the sludge use in agriculture.
