The authors discuss the potential of web health surveillance in the field of behavioral medicine. Topics addressed include barriers to health surveys that can be overcome with the use of web data in behavioral medicine, the ease of observing behavior or the manifestation of mental health problems via the Internet, and capturing social context online. Also mentioned are web data's provision of real-time insights into behavioral medicine and identifying new hypotheses in behavioral medicine.
