- Title
Organic photochemistry: Exciting excited-state aromaticity.
- Authors
Ottosson, Henrik
- Abstract
The article focuses on the rules on the description of aromaticity and antiaromaticity using perturbation molecular orbital theory published by Colin Baird in 1972. It says that the Baird rules for groundstate aromaticity are changed in the lowest triplet excited state since 4n rings display aromatic character while 4n+2 rings displays antiaromatic character. It states that the rules are said to be the photochemistry analogues of the 4n+2 pi-electron rules of Erich Hückle. It also mentions that the rules are powerful method in the design of molecules with targeted photochemical and optical properties, which can be widely used in the next 40 years.
