- Abstract
According to archaeological evidences, historical documents and field study materials, this paper reviews the developing process of the traditional felting techniques in Xinjiang. The paper divides the process into 5 phases such as emergence phase, primary development phase, integrated development phase, peak phase and foreign development phase, and represents the main features of the felting products in different eras. Based on all the above analyses, the paper comes to a conclusion that the traditional felting techniques in Xinjiang went through a developing process from un-dyed to dyed, no-cutting to cutting, just felting to felting plus embroidery and patchwork, as well as felt to multi-fabrics mix. At the end, the paper also discusses the possibilities that using the ancient felting techniques on the modern design of household textiles, clothing and tourist souvenirs.
