- Abstract
The article discusses the topical and the consequential role of wine in the life of Professor Godfrey St. Peter in the book 'The Professor's House," by Willa Cather. According to the author, St. Peter and his physician disapprove of the lack of wine during the first few years of Prohibition, during which the novel takes place. The symbolism of sherry in the novel is discussed. Letters written by Cather in which she acknowledges her appreciation for wine and dinner parties are discussed. Several scenes in the novel are presented and analyzed.
