- Abstract
This article discusses the experience of teaching modern British history in a social sciences context. The author, a historian of social policy, highlights the deep relationship between history and sociology, as well as other social sciences. They explain that teaching history outside of a history department requires considering what history is as a discipline. The author emphasizes the importance of teaching history to students studying related disciplines, such as sociology and criminology, and how history can provide a longer view of key issues. They also discuss the challenges and benefits of teaching and researching outside of a history department.
